The best A.I. tools for writing, reviewing and shipping code

Updated October 21, 2026. Picks are our opinion; the facts come from each tool's listing, which links to the tool's own website.

Picking a coding A.I. is easier when you know what you want it to do. 🔎 Ask yourself a few questions first. Do you want help inside your editor, or an agent that takes on whole tasks while you review? Do you work alone or on a team? Do you already pay for an A.I. plan you could reuse? Then check the fine print. Usage limits, extra model costs and how your data is handled can matter as much as the features. ⚠️ Prices on some listings aren't posted, so confirm them before you commit. Below are six tools from our directory. The picks are our take, based only on what each listing says. 🙌

Best free, open source option: OpenCode

OpenCode is free and uses the MIT License. It works in your terminal, on the desktop or as an IDE extension, and connects to 75+ A.I. providers, including local models. 💡 Note that connecting other providers may add costs, and data is stored when you use the free models.

Best for handing off tasks and reviewing: Cursor

Cursor lets an agent take on coding tasks while you make the decisions. Cloud agents build, test and demo features for you to review. There's a free plan to try, but its A.I. usage is limited, and third-party models are billed separately by usage.

Best for teams that need admin controls: GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot works in your editor, the command line and GitHub. Admins get audit logs and control over which MCP servers developers can use. There's a free plan, but on individual plans your data may be used for training unless you opt out.

Best for running several agents in one place: JetBrains Air

JetBrains Air finds compatible agents on your machine and connects them with a click. You can review diffs in context and comment on specific lines for the agent. Pricing isn't clearly listed, and cloud runs are still rolling out, so you may not have access yet.
