GitHub Copilot

An A.I. coding helper that works in your editor, the command line and GitHub.

GitHub Copilot is an A.I. helper for people who write code. The page calls it "Your AI accelerator for every workflow, from the editor to the enterprise." It's made by GitHub, and the pages say it's built into GitHub.

You can use it for chat help, code suggestions and explanations. You can also hand tasks to agents, which are A.I. helpers that work in the background. It works in editors such as Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs and Neovim, plus the command line. There's a free plan with 2,000 completions per month. Paid plans start at $10 per user per month. Organizations can get plans with admin controls.

What it does

Our take (opinion)

Best for

  • Developers who want A.I. help inside the editor they already use
  • Teams that want admin controls and audit logs for A.I. coding tools
  • Students and hobbyists who'd like to try a free plan first

Watch out for

  • Heavier chat and agent use draws on monthly credits, so costs can rise
  • On individual plans (Free, Pro, Pro+), your interaction data may be used to train models unless you opt out
  • Suggestions may be weaker for languages less common in public code
