OpenAI on Google Cloud: Will Gemini Stay the Default?
Google Cloud is launching OpenAI models in its model garden.
๐ What Google Cloud announced
Google Cloud says it's launching OpenAI models in its model garden. The Google Cloud post is dated October 21, 2026.[1]
Think of the model garden as a menu. Each A.I. model is a different dish. That's our way of explaining it.
Three models are rolling out now in private preview to select enterprise customers: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna.[1]
Ars Technica says the models will appear in the model garden in the coming weeks.[2]
๐ฝ๏ธ The three models
Google describes GPT-6 Astra as built for demanding work. GPT-6.1 Sol is near-Astra intelligence at lower cost. GPT-6 Luna is fast and cost-efficient.[1]
๐ณ Billing, access and data
The OpenAI models are sold through Google Cloud Marketplace. Usage appears on one invoice, draws down existing commitments and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans.[1]
Starting today, customers can build with the models through APIs. They can also connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to Google's Gemini platform for inference.[1]
The models run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure. Confidential Compute is also coming soon.[1]
Yashodha Bhavnani, VP of A.I. Products at Box, says using OpenAI models through Google Cloud pairs frontier models with Google Cloud's security and compliance.[1]
๐ค Why would Google sell a rival's models?
Ars Technica says Google would prefer everyone used Gemini with Google Cloud services. Still, Google says it's the only hyperscale cloud provider offering all three leading closed source LLMs.[2][1]
Claude is already supported in Google Cloud. The OpenAI deal offers another alternative to Gemini. OpenAI notes Microsoft continues to be its primary cloud partner.[2]
Google recently rolled out Gemini 4 Argon, which it says brings its flagship back to parity with the competition. Ars Technica says it burns through tokens at an astonishing rate.[2]
Google says customers can swap models without architectural lock-in and without separate vendor contracts.[1]
Our take: OpenAI could be adding a second shelf, not moving out of its first. If swapping is easy, model loyalty could get harder to keep. Choosing a model might feel like picking a tool for the job.
๐ ๏ธ What's still unclear
OpenAI models are coming soon to Gemini for business and Google Antigravity. So far, Antigravity has supported Gemini and Claude.[1][2]
Ars Technica says Google hasn't specified which OpenAI models will appear in Antigravity.[2]
โ How to get started
Our take: if you're watching your budget, try Sol and Luna on one real task before paying for Astra. If you handle private data, read the security fine print, since some protections are still coming soon.
๐ก Our take: what this could mean for you
- If you're on Google Cloud, ask about your spending commitments, since OpenAI usage may draw them down.
- Test Sol and Luna on one real task before paying for the top model.
- Treat model choice as a swappable tool, and read the security details, since Zero Data Retention and Confidential Compute are still coming soon.
